ILD has been an institution within the leadership course structure of the Royal Academy of Engineering for 15 Years. It's like the special ‘handshake’ of the engineering elite.

But why is the 'WILD' concept so unique?

Well, we believe that to be a great leader, you not only have to be aware of what actually is great leadership, the styles and the roles, but you also have to learn to understand yourself. What your leadership behaviours are, and how your inter-personal and communication skills are perceived by others and the ‘type’ of leader you are.

We believe that there is no better way to understand your strengths; qualities; leadership type and your purpose within a team, than to thrust you with other potential leaders of industry together in a challenging, adventurous and natural environment.

We will introduce you to the basic theories behind the concepts of teamwork and leadership and enable you to apply those theories in a variety of challenging situations.

During the weekends, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a number of physical activities but will not be asked to do anything that is not within the capabilities of the averagely fit person.

It is not an objective of the programme to push a student beyond a level at which they are not comfortable. The physical aspects of the course are not there as a prime objective, but merely as a backdrop against which each student can participate at a level appropriate for themselves, as an individual and develop their leadership potential.

You will learn about yourself and others, in an adventurous setting and have a greater understanding of the key attributes and qualities of successful leadership.
